HookED says: 'Pam uses a unique classroom based approach to SOLO Taxonomy (Biggs and Collis 1982). This approach allows students to use SOLO as a model to self-assess their functioning and declarative knowledge outcomes for different tasks. With SOLO the focus is on the complexity of the structure of the student response, rather than on a categorisation of the student themselves.' Visit www.pamhook.com to find out more about SOLO Taxonomy. This site also has a range of free resources for the classroom. SOLO Taxonomy to me is... A common language that students can use to reflect on learning and communicate ones understanding. Students can immediately show their understanding using hand signals and can use the SOLO learning verbs to identify the depth of their knowledge. The Journey I was originally introduced to SOLO Taxonomy by Catholic Education Officer, Danielle Carter (@daniellecart) in January 2013. From this introduction I accessed the SOLO Taxonomy Guide for School and attempted to begin incorporating some of the ideas and strategies suggested in my grade 4/5 class. I slowly began to introduce my students to hand signals after working as a class to choose signals to represent each level so that the whole class could easily communicate understanding with me and each other. Eventually SOLO Hexagons were also introduced as a way for students to record their knowledge and demonstrate their connected understanding as it grew throughout learning. Hexagons |
These posters were created by combining images of the students and their hand signals with the Free SOLO Symbols Posters. They are displayed in the classroom.
